In this system, when D is tuned at 288 Hz, the note A (the perfect fifth of D) must amount to 432 Hz because it is 3/2 (or 1.5) times the frequency of D (288 Hz x 1.5 = 432 Hz). The 3:2 interval ratio found in Pythagorean tuning also informs a distinct but similar concept known as Pythagorean temperament, a 12-tone system based on a stack of perfect fifths. Though it's unclear who exactly is responsible for what became known as Pythagorean tuning, it's believed Pythagoras developed the tuning system using the ratio of 3:2 as the basis for perfect fifth harmonies (hence why it's named after him). Pythagoras, ancient philosopher and mathematician famous for his theorem regarding right angles, also had a deep interest in music. We'll keep it brief by touching on the main players and events that built this rich history. The complete history of this standardization, of course, is far more robust, and begins a long, long time ago. The short version of the history is as follows: In the 20th century, a group of influential musicians and physicists worldwide gathered and agreed to set A4= 440 Hz as the standard tuning for orchestras moving forward. ![]() The standard tuning of A4= 440 Hz is no exception to this rule. Standards emerge for a host of arbitrary and evidence-based reasons alike - regardless of these reasons, something ultimately becomes standard practice because enough people (especially those with authority and status) agree upon it. ![]() How A4 = 440 Hz Became the Standard: A Brief History In this blog, we'll discuss the historical rise of 440 Hz as today's concert pitch, the real and perceived differences between 440 and 432 Hz, and why some people prefer one tuning standard over the other. Still, there remains a group of contrarians, audio enthusiasts, and true believers who prefer 432 Hz, or at least want to see this alternative tuning standard become more accepted by modern ears. It's a long-standing debate among musicians, audio engineers, acoustic physicists, and pseudo-scientists: which tuning standard is the "right one?" A4= 440 Hz or A4= 432 Hz? In many ways, the debate seems to be over - 440 Hz has been the common tuning standard in most parts of the world for several decades. ![]() ![]() See Change Touch Bar settings.īrowse keyboard shortcuts, turn them on or off, or customize them. ![]() If your Mac has a Touch Bar, customize the Touch Bar and Control Strip. : Press Shift + 6 to type a caret and then type the vowel. : Type a backquote (at the top-left corner of the keyboard, left of the '1' key) and then type the vowel. The long-term impacts of consuming artificial dyes are still uncertain, and it is always better to err on the side of caution when it comes to the well-being of wildlife. Screen time is the first of two secrets to a happy road trip, and all three rows had ample access to entertainment. I find the Pacifica’s ride more composed and athletic, but the Odyssey never felt sloppy. Overall, the suspension has a controlled feel body motion over bumps is well checked and lean in corners is manageable. As large, long vehicles, there’s a certain degree of clumsiness inherent in minivans, but the Odyssey’s engineers have done a decent job. Once the battery charge is depleted, it’s EPA-rated at 30 mpg combined.Ĭomfort comes through in terms of the Odyssey’s ride and handling, as well, but it could be better. Chrysler also offers a higher-mileage model with the Pacifica Hybrid, which gets an EPA rating of 82 mpg-equivalent on electricity and gas, but note that the Pacifica Hybrid is a plug-in hybrid with an electric-only range of up to 32 miles, so mpg-e is not an apples-to-apples comparison with the Sienna hybrid. T he Toyota Sienna, meanwhile, is in a totally different fuel economy class: For 2021, it comes only as a hybrid and Toyota estimates the van will get 33 mpg combined (the current V-6-powered Sienna gets an EPA-estimated 21 mpg combined with FWD). The Kia Sedona is rated a bit lower than the Odyssey at 18/24/21 mpg. Chrysler added optional all-wheel drive for 2020, which lowers mileage to 17/25/20 mpg (the Odyssey comes only with FWD). The Odyssey matches the Pacifica’s EPA combined rating with front-wheel drive. The mode is not for everyone, however: Acceleration response goes from prompt to poky and you feel every bit of the van’s 4,000-plus pounds off the line. I averaged 26 mpg, most of it highway driving and some of it in Eco mode, which alters accelerator response and transmission tuning to save fuel. The van is EPA rated 19/28/22 mpg city/highway/combined, and that fits with my trip’s mileage. When pushed, it tended to complain loudly, but it quieted down nicely for a quiet, well-isolated ride overall. The pair seamlessly delivered what was needed both around town and on the highway shifts were well timed and subtle, and the Odyssey rarely felt underpowered despite a hefty load of people and gear. The sole powertrain is a 280-horsepower, 3.5-liter V-6 engine and 10-speed automatic transmission. Over 2,000-plus miles, it was the best behaved member of the trip, delivering a comfortable ride and ample power. We have found that supracondylar fractures that occur after total knee arthroplasty can be managed by either traction or application of a cast, or both, which usually results in healing of the fracture and a satisfactory outcome of the arthroplasty. Of the three fractures that were initially treated by external fixation, one had an excellent and two had a good result at an average of forty-five months after fracture. One patient died perioperatively and another required an above-the-knee amputation because of sepsis. In contrast, only three of the five fractures that were treated by early open reduction and internal fixation had a satisfactory result, and one of them required a second bone-grafting procedure. At an average of forty months after revision, the nine knees were rated as having one excellent, four good, three satisfactory, and one failed result. The nine remaining knees required revision of the arthroplasty because of non-union in four knees, malunion in two, loosening of the component in two, and extension lag in one. Fourteen of the seventeen were followed for more than two years they had no significant difference in the knee score and lost less than 10 degrees of motion. Seventeen of them (65.4 per cent) healed and required no surgical treatment. Twenty-six fractures (in twenty-five patients) were treated by non-operative methods. Malalignment of the component could not be implicated as a cause. Patients who had osteoporosis, rheumatoid arthritis, one or more previous arthroplasties of the knee, or inadvertent breeching of the anterior aspect of the femoral cortex at operation appeared to be particularly at risk for a supracondylar femoral fracture. We reviewed the data on thirty-six supracondylar fractures of the femur (in thirty-four patients) that occurred after total knee arthroplasties that were done between April 1974 and December 1981. ![]() For the global time standard, see Universal Time. The confusion of times came to an end when standard time zones were formally adopted by the U.S. A notable exception was Detroit (located about halfway between the meridians of Eastern and Central time), which kept local time until 1900, then tried Central Standard Time, local mean time, and Eastern Standard Time (EST) before a May 1915 ordinance settled on EST and was ratified by popular vote in August 1916. ![]() Within a year 85% of all cities with populations over 10,000 (about 200 cities) were using standard time. The North American zones were named Intercolonial, Eastern, Central, Mountain, and Pacific. It was inaugurated on Sunday, November 18, 1883, also called "The Day of Two Noons", when each railroad station clock was reset as standard-time noon was reached within each time zone. For example, the border between its Eastern and Central time zones ran through Detroit, Buffalo, Pittsburgh, Atlanta, and Charleston. The borders of its time zones ran through railroad stations, often in major cities. In 1870 he proposed four ideal time zones having north–south borders, the first centered on Washington, D.C., but by 1872 the first was centered on meridian 75° west of Greenwich, with natural borders such as sections of the Appalachian Mountains. Dowd proposed a system of hourly standard time zones for North American railroads around 1863, although he published nothing on the matter at that time and did not consult railroad officials until 1869. 1913 time zone map of the United States, showing boundaries very different from todayĬharles F. Some junctions served by several railroads had a clock for each railroad, each showing a different time. Each railroad used its own standard time, usually based on the local time of its headquarters or most important terminus, and the railroad's train schedules were published using its own time. Timekeeping on North American railroads in the 19th century was complex. This standard was known as New Zealand Mean Time. It was based on longitude 172☃0′ east of Greenwich, that is 11 hours 30 minutes ahead of GMT. On November 2, 1868, the then British Colony of New Zealand officially adopted a standard time to be observed throughout the colony. Some British clocks from this period have two minute hands, one for the local time and one for GMT. By 1855, 98% of Great Britain's public clocks were using GMT, but it was not made the island's legal time until August 2, 1880. This practice was soon followed by other railway companies in Great Britain and became known as Railway Time.Īround August 23, 1852, time signals were first transmitted by telegraph from the Royal Observatory. In November 1840, the Great Western Railway started using GMT kept by portable chronometers. In the 19th century, as transportation and telecommunications improved, it became increasingly inconvenient for each location to observe its own solar time.
